Teenage Skin. Part II
In last week's blog, I discussed the reasons for acne. The condition that many teenagers have to face is down to an excess production of sebum which leads to blocked pores resulting in the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, which causes the red spots that are synonymous with acne. In many cases the acne becomes so severe that it will cause scarring and have a detrimental impact on moral and self-esteem.
Many factors are important including good skincare routines, however, don't forget that what you put inside your body is just as important as what you put on it. Our skin is the largest organ on the body and is a reflection of our overall health. Certain studies conducted over the years have shown that acne is far more common in Western societies (80-90% of teenagers are affected) where consumption of sugary, processed foods is much higher than other parts of the world. Some of the worst culprits when it comes to breakouts are, dairy, sugar, carbs and red meat to name but a few. All these foods produce excess sebum levels, encourage inflammation and Â put a strain on the body's ability to rid itself of toxins.
But what about skincare? Many people make the mistake of cutting out moisturising when their skin is too oily. This is probably the worst thing to do. Your skin will end up producing more oil as it will over compensate for being dry. Ideally, stick to a natural skincare routing that does not use harsh, chemical laden products but instead keeps skin clean using plant based cleansers, toners and moisturisers that work in harmony with your skin.

This cleanser from BSkincare is handmade using natural ingredients. It contains Lavender and Spearmint which is great for acne as it has antiseptic properties together with calming irritation.

Our hand & body soap is fantastic for a gentle cleanse. Our Rosemary & Peppermint with Argan Oil is particularly good as the Peppermint and Rosemary draw out excess oil in the skin, while acting as an antiseptic for the skin too. Argan oil provides essential fatty acids to relieve and promote healing.
This toning water is the best way to soothe the skin, remove remaining dirt or make-up, and prepare your face for moisturiser. It felt mild on the skin. And given that it is fragrance-free, paraben-free and alcohol-free with no artificial colours or mineral oils, there is no wondering why!
This is a light, fragrance-free moisturiser which contains a very high proportion of organic aloe vera. This cream is soothing. Non greasy and promotes healing
This face wash is balancing yet gentle and contains ingredients such as broad leaf kelp extract, wheat protein & tourmaline which prevents excess oil production while simultaneously protecting dry patches. Leaves a pleasant aroma and feeling on the skin.
While, in some cases, no one of these products may be suitable, we hope the above suggestions have been helpful to you if you know, like me, someone suffering from acne. It is always best to try out products on a small area first to make sure that there are no adverse reactions or that the product does not exacerbate the condition. It is worth remembering that there is o cure as such for acne, but it is instead a balancing act but we can win the battle with elimination (of processed, sugary foods) and a good skincare routine using natural, gentle products.
