Summer Skincare Switches and Swaps

You wouldn’t wear your winter coats and jumpers in summer, right?

Well, the same analogy can also be applied to our skincare routines and the products that we use. As the seasons switch up and change, so should the products we use on our skin.

I’m a firm believer that skincare is intuitive, everyone will swear by a different holy grail product – after all skincare and our routines are all about what suit our skin’s needs, and that will vary from person to person, week to week and even on a day to day basis.

Having said all this, there are some skincare switches and swaps that we all should take note of as the sun shines and the temperature rises…

We’ll be focusing our attention on the summer skincare basics – if you know our brand, you’ll know we love to advocate simplicity when it comes to the products we use and how we love to tweak staple products to suit our skin’s varying needs…

1. CLEANSE

Can’t stress the importance of cleansing properly especially in the summer months. Think of all that extra SPF, sweat (from lovely soaring temperatures), pollution and makeup grime that our skin is dealing with on a regular basis. Gently and effectively cleansing is essential. However, you may want to opt for a light and refreshing milk cleanser or our gorgeously gentle and effective Skin Soap as a great option for summer skin.

Swap your heavy oil or balm based cleanser for a light cleansing bar like our Honey & Oat Skin Soap.

Top Tip: Double cleanse in the evenings, perhaps cleanse with a gel/milk based formulation followed by a lighter Skin Soap cleanse to ensure that all the day’s grime and build up is gently removed from your skin.

2. EXFOLIATE

Funnily enough, we always ask that you exfoliate your skin in moderation, not more than once a week. But we’ve come across advice from dermatologists who suggest that summer is the time to slough away those dead skin cells. We’re not suggesting daily exfoliation here, simply to incorporate an extra session or so in your week, especially if you’re prone to oily skin.

Switch up the way you customise your Skin Cashmere for the summer.

Try activating it with your favourite floral water for a quick, refreshing face mask and gently buff/massage with your fingers for an easy exfoliation. We love products that can double up and be used in different ways and our Skin Cashmere is the ultimate multi-tasking beauty staple.

3. TONE

The job of toner is to effectively balance the skin’s pH level, calm and prepare the skin for moisturising. We love spritzing floral hydrosols (steam distilled floral water) onto the skin after cleansing. A favourite is rosewater because of its effectiveness at balancing the skin’s pH level, its also naturally hydrating and calming, making it a perfect toner for all skin types including dry and mature skin.

Swap toners with harsh ingredients like alcohols, these just strip the skin of its natural oils, to a more natural hydrating floral water.

Look for moisture locking ingredients like hyaluronic acid, honey and glycerine.

TOP TIP: Carry your toner round with you and mist your face every time the heat gets too much when you’re out and about. A great way to keep you cool whilst giving your skin some extra TLC.

4. MOISTURISE

You still need to apply a good moisturiser but using a lighter formulation that is preferably non-comedogenic will not only hydrate your skin but also help prevent blocked pores.

Switch your regular day cream for a lightweight alternative.

5. SPF

Its obvious and a crucial step all year round no matter the season, but its more important than ever during the summer months. We’re huge advocates of the mineral sunscreens which typically contain ingredients like zinc oxide as they provide a physical barrier that sits on your skin, reflecting harmful UVA & UVB rays.

Switching to mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide offers immediate protection.

No need to wait for it to absorb as with conventional chemical sunscreens.

TOP TIP: It’s essential to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day.

6. REPAIR

Enjoy the glorious sun responsibly and try to seek shade or avoid prolonged sun exposure during times of the day when the sun is most intense. Summer skincare doesn’t need to change too much if you’re already using good quality, customisable products. Simple tweaks and swaps are all you need to ensure that your skin stays healthy, glowing and protected.

Of course always listen to your skin, like we’ve said, skincare is intuitive and what works for one person won’t necessarily work for the other. However, the advice above should help you tweak and optimise your existing routine.
