Lock Down Series – Home Spa 101

Has lock down got you feeling frazzled? Are you longing for a pick me up to lift your spirits?

Our current predicament has really brought to light the little pleasures that we all take for granted. Our basic freedoms to go when and wherever we please be it to see our friends and family, eat out, theatres, retail therapy or hobbies. These simple acts contribute greatly towards our mental health and wellbeing.

But it has also highlighted how crucial solitary time is.

So if you’re feeling a little exasperated after playing the role of mother, teacher, employee, housekeeper, referee, peacemaker, sports instructor (the list is endless!)… can we suggest that a little me time is in order?

Recreate a mini home spa pampering session when you’ve clocked off from work or when the kids are snuggly tucked into bed. It’ll help you feel relaxed and rejuvenated, ready to take on whatever Boris throws at you!

  1. Choose your room…

I know, there isn’t much choice given we are in lockdown and it is after all a home spa – but have a think about the kind of treatments you’d like to recreate… and then think about the best place to indulge in them. Most likely the toss up will be between bedroom or bathroom, or you could flow between both if you want to go full hog.

  1. Create the right ambience.

You want to be in the right frame of mind and the right ambience is crucial. Try to choose a room where you’re not going to be haunted by housework… you want to fee calm and relaxed by the end of your session and being surrounded by piles of laundry might detract from the overall affect. Try lighting some scented candles for a subtle glow and scent or burning your favourite essential oil.

  1. Relaxing Music…

Get those smooth and soothing tunes on to help you to relax and zone out. Sometimes silence breeds overthinking, you want this to be a moment of calm in the turbulence of modern life.

  1. Light Refreshements…

When you go off to a spa, you’re often given a refreshment of sort help unwind you before you begin any treatments. Try this at home too.

Fruit infused water, herbal or green teas are wonderful options that can help you switch off before you begin.

  1. Choose your treatments…

Now this is the fun part. There are so many treatments and rituals that can easily be recreated at home to help enhance your mood and invigorated your body. We’ve got our favourite suggestions for treatments below. Mix and match based on the time you have and how you’re feeling to create a bespoke session just for yourself. Think about these before hand and try and prep the things you’ll need, keeping them at hand, this way you’re not rushing around in the middle your spa session gathering the things you’ll need and ruing that Zen moment.

Treatment Suggestions

Facial Steam

A simple and effective way to essentially prep the skin for the treatments you’re about to indulge in as it opens the pores. Simply place hot water into a bowl and add a few drop of essential oil, lavender, rose and neroli are my favourites. If you don’t have these to hand, we get it – we’re in lock down, try using a herbal tea as a substitute? Rose or peppermint teas are a great alternative, simply rip open the tea bag and place the contents in your hot water bowl. Another great idea is fragrant flowers/leaves from the garden or even just a few slices of fresh lemon?

Face Mask

Lockdown has ruled out a full on luxury facial with your favourite facialist, but there is no reason why you can’t cleanse and indulge in a face mask. It will leave your skin feeling refreshed, toned and glowing and never underestimate the power of nourished skin. If you haven’t got any masks to hand, try making one using simple kitchen ingredients. Mashing an avocado and mixing with honey makes a pretty tasty mask that hydrates and nourishes the skin. If you fancy something a little more indulgent try our award winning Skin Cashmere. A powdered clay free, botanical mask inspired by the bridal rituals from Kashmir. Simply mix with a little floral/water and apply generously over your face. Leave on for about 7 mins and removes gently with a warm damp towel.

Don’t forget to massage your skin with your favourite moisturiser after your masking session – this helps to lock in moisture and finishes off the treatment nicely. We suggest using a natural facial oil. Oils feel a little more indulgent than conventional moisturisers as they haven’t been watered down with unnecessary bulking agents and prove to be a lot more potent and nourishing.  We absolutely love Argan & Orange Blossom Elixir, a 100% natural Berber beauty oil which is rich in anti-oxidants, vitamin E and omega fatty acids – all of which really help to heal and regenerate the skin. A delicate fusion of orange blossom, mandarin and bergamot oils delicately scent the skin.

Hair Mask/Conditioning treatment

If your tresses are feeling neglected why not treat them to an overnight hair treatment as part of your pamper session? We have a couple of tried and tested favourites and mixing up a hair treatment can be easily adapted to what you have available.

If an overnight treatment is not your thing, try a quick hair mask. I love mixing aloe vera gel, coconut oil and honey into a paste and apply on dry frazzled hair. I wash out after about 15 minutes and I cannot tell you how much of a difference if makes in softening my very dry and course hair.

But if the above sounds too messy, try an easier conditioning treatment. Hair oils have been a simple and effective hair treatment across the silk roads for centuries and they can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Simple olive oil works wonders, as does argan, coconut and sweet almond oils. Our multi award winning Argan and Orange Blossom Elixir is a multi tasking beauty oil and can be used as a hair conditioning oil too. Simple massage the hair with your chosen oil starting from the root and working your way to the tips. Use the opportunity to massage the scalp to increase circulation and stimulate the hair follicles. Ensure the hair is covered in oil and wrap a towel around your hair. You can leave over night (just remember to cover your pillow) or just leave for about half an hour while you indulge in the remainder of your spa session.

Have a Therapeutic Bath

Don’t underestimate the power of a bath, with a little thought and planning you can transform it into a home spa equivalent of a therapeutic plunge pool by simply adding the right ‘healing accompaniment’.

Run yourself a hot bath, add some skin nourishing bath salts, essential oils or bath oils and simply immerse yourself in pure bliss. Consider an Epsom salts bath if you have stiff or sore joints. A Himalayan bath salts is a great alternative for those who want to replenish lost minerals or have sensitive skin. A soak in a relaxing bath is soothes tired limbs and muscles, helps to relax your mental state of mind and helps to boost blood circulation.  The perfect end to a mini home spa.

Other Smaller treatments to consider if time is not on your side.

A Foot Soak

Don’t have time for a bath? Well give yourself a foot bath instead. The same principle applies, simply add a healing substance to your foot bath and soak those feet. Our feet are the first to feel exhausted after any long day, you can help alleviate that fatigue by soothing them with their own special soak. Epsom salts and lavender oil are a great duo in general but serve feet pretty well. The salts can relieve soreness and lavender has natural antiseptic properties. A foot soak is also a great way to tackle dry cracked heels and soles. Pat dry, gently file with a foot file and finish off with an indulgent balm or butter for baby soft feet.

Hand Scrub

If the constant hand washing has aged you hands by 10 years try this quick and easy natural hand scrub, made with only two ingredients; soft brown sugar and honey. Simply add a dollop of honey into one palm, top it with a tea spoon of soft brown sugar and gently rub your hands together imitating hand washing actions. Simply rinse with warm water and moiosturise with a natural balm or butter. Instantly soft and smooth hands.
